Our Story

When Afsana Chowdhury first became an attorney, family law was not where she expected to build her career. That changed when she began encountering people going through divorce and other family law situations, and she saw the one thing they all had in common: fear.

They feared losing their children. They feared giving up everything they had spent years building. They feared being isolated, left out of a society built around couples and families, and facing life as a single parent. They feared making the wrong decision. They feared the high cost of legal representation. And they feared trusting a lawyer, because they had no way of knowing whether that lawyer truly had their best interest at heart.

Because of that fear, many of them stayed stuck. They remained in circumstances they wanted to change but couldn’t bring themselves to act on, because every path forward was filled with uncertainty. They felt lost, confused, and unsure of what to do next.

Afsana also noticed what traditional family law litigation was doing to families. Case after case, she watched clients spend thousands of dollars while their attorneys argued over procedural issues and technicalities, filed countless motions, engaged in discovery disputes, and wasted time over scheduling conflicts. Hearings were continued, the fights escalated, and months passed, until families were left depleted, relationships were damaged beyond repair, and resolution was no closer than it had been at the start.

She recognized that the way most firms practiced family law was making things worse, not better. The messaging was almost always about the fight: who would win in court, how hard they would battle, how aggressively they would pursue the other side. That kind of language wasn’t helping anyone. It was adding to the fear.

In 2014, she founded Chowdhury Divorce Law Group around a different premise. Clients don’t come to a family law firm because they want a battle. They come because they need clarity, confidence, and a path forward. They need someone who will help them see what their life could look like on the other side, and who will work to get them there without making things harder than they already are.

That remains the mission of this firm today.
